In memory of Billie’s dog, Ginger

Those of you who read Billie’s blog already know that her dog, Ginger, passed away on Sunday. It’s hard enough to start your first tenure-track job out of grad school–finding a new home, leaving behind the familiar places where you used to live, dealing with new course preps, navigating the absence of friends and family–but it would be especially difficult to deal with the death of a beloved pet in your first semester as a new professor. And to do so in the last week or so of the semester, when things can feel doubly stressful, just makes it even harder.

On behalf of Team ProfHacker, I ‘d like to invite you to donate to the Humane Society, a worthy organization that looks out for the well-being of animals everywhere, and (something people often overlook) provides lower-cost pet-related services and products for the human owners of animals. Or, if you like, donate to the cause of your choice in memory of Ginger.

To donate to the Humane Society, you can click here for a secure donation form that allows you to “give a memorial gift.” I realize that the lowest amount listed ($35) might seem like a lot for those of us tallying up our holiday expenses, so you shouldn’t hesitate to use the “Other” option, instead, if you prefer a more modest amount.

When filling out the form, just use this information for the “Recipient’s Address” field, and Billie will receive your sympathy card:

Dr. Billie Hara
Department of English
Texas A&M University-Corpus Christi
6300 Ocean Drive
Corpus Christi, TX. 78412

Thank you.

Thank you for this, George. I appreciate your compassion. The Humane Society is a wonderful organization. Although Ginger wasn’t a shelter animal, she had been abandoned in a parking lot as a very sick little puppy when we found her. She always knew she’d been rescued . . . just as the other animals in shelter realize that when they are adopted, they’ve been spared. Please donate to your local shelter . . . or better yet, if you have the means, adopt an animal. You won’t regret it. They’ll never forget it.

In my experience, rescue animals make great pets! For example, all of my mom’s cats are “volunteers,” as I like to call them. Well, I found this big guy in a phone booth in the parking lot of an abandoned fireworks store in rural Tennessee in 1990. My mom adopted him soon thereafter.
